Ancient rome's medicine and surgery
Why was Ancient Rome’s technology more advanced for its time? Medicine and healing were
part of technology they had. With the knowledge they knew about this subject,
they helped advance their ways. They would do surgery on people who fought in
the wars and battles. This way not as many people died.
The first doctors in Rome were Greek, slaves captured in
war. “Many ideas from the Greek were adopted by the Romans.” “The Romans had one of the best
and most sophisticated medical systems of the ancient world”, even though
medical science was an infancy in Rome. Diseases were thought to be created by
witchcraft, curses, and disfavor of the gods. Healing was sought after in
religious temples, they made sacrifices in hope of receiving healing.
In Ancient Rome they used plants to make medicine for healing. “They had
elecampane that helped with digestion, while also had fennel to calm.” “Wounds
were washed with acetum, which actually was better than Joseph Liter’s carbolic
acid that was based on Louis Pasteur’s germ theory disease.” “The doctors were
almost all men and mainly Greek.” The doctors were very expensive and most
times were frauds.
“In surgery people trained in the army had the jobs of
sawing or setting bones.” Doctors used instruments to help carry out
examinations such as a hook to hold the wound open, forceps’, and saws. Many
people died from surgery ether from shock or blood loss. The only pain reducer
was alcohol to dull the senses. Having surgery was painful in the ancient
times.
Ancient Rome used their knowledge to help advance technology. The medicine
helped small things while surgery helped save peoples life. By having healing
techniques, ancient Rome built a stable structure.
