Roman military
The reason why Rome’s empire was so great and large was because their army was the greatest for their time. The roman soldier was the age from 17 to the age of 46. The standard roman soldier’s military weapons are a javelin which is a 6 foot wooden pool with a knife at the end of the pool. The sword was a 2 foot long double edged piece of metal. The roman dagger was 7-11 inches for close quarters combat made from metal. The roman shield was made from metal and rectangular shape. The roman armor is a cape made of cloth, a breast plate made of strong metal and some leather. They used metal greaves for calf protection, and they used metal arm braces for arm protection. The armor was upgraded based on their military rank; this is for the standard roman soldier.
Military tactics were very advanced than other empires. The Romans would create a siege tower and push it up against a wall and climb up the stairs then go over the wall. They had a special formation on having protection walking, they would put shields all around them and then put shields over them so arrows wont kill them, then they would stick out javelins and would kill any ground fighters. On another side the Romans would take a battering ram and smash the sides to get in. It had a shield over the top so the soldiers wouldn’t get hit by arrows. The other Romans would operate two types of things, a ballista, and a catapult. The ballista is a huge crossbow. It was made of would and would launch bolts made of wood and metal and would strike a person. A catapult would launch huge rocks into opposing fighters, and their castle.
While on there next journey, they would have to walk on foot to there next destination. Only the higher ranking soldiers were able to have a horse. The Romans during there marches would travel up 30 miles a day. Once night fall came, the army would set up a camp. They would dig a trench and put up a wooden wall then they would put tents inside of the wall then pack back up in the early morning and go. Sometimes during rough terrain they would have to carry the rolling equipment which would sometimes weigh up to 40 pounds a piece.
by having this strong army, the empire is able to expand as north as britian, as west to portugual, as east to saudi arabia, and as south to north africa. this great empire began in 753 b.c.e. and ended in 200 a.d.
